This is Guava who is a type of blue-tongued lizard known as a Shingleback lizard or skink. His large, rough scales resemble the overlapping tiles found on the roofs of houses. These were once known as Shingle roofs and hence the name Shingleback lizard or Shingleback skink. Although not found in Melbourne they can be found in nearby areas such as the Grampians, also areas of SA, WA and QLD as shown by the distribution map. Other names given to this type of lizard are Stumpy-tailed lizard, Bob-tailed skink, Two-headed lizard, Pine-cone lizard and Sleepy lizard. You can meet our Shingle-back lizards Guava and Pineapple (from WA) at any of our public events or by booking a birthday party or community event. They'd love to meet you.

Last Thursday Lizzy's Lizzards visited the Year 7 classes at Braybrook College for their Environment Day. The students learnt about wildlife in their local area including frogs, birds, lizards, snakes and possums and what they could do to help maintain their habitats and ensure the animals remain healthy and safe. These included having a birdbath and planting native species in their yards to attract birds and other animals, always putting rubbish in the bin so that it didn't end up in waterways and controlling pets such as dogs and cats so that they aren't free to roam and attack local wildlife. Other presentations on the day included CERES Environmental Centre, Fisheries Dept and City West Water. It was a very enjoyable day and students became aware of things they could do to make a difference in their local environment.
